PROJECTS
The TICK TOCK PROJECT
Promoting Just Working Practices with the TICK TOCK Project
As part of The WELL Centre’s commitment to promoting just work practices and social cohesion, we are continuing our work as a lead partner in the ESF EQUAL funded TICK TOCK Project led by the Learning and Skills Council across the South East to explore the issues pertaining to older people and their engagement with the workforce.
EQUAL is a European funded initiative that promotes Action Research into new ways of engaging and retaining people in the labour market, developing and testing new service models and products in different and untried ways of working. With new approaches to employment, and improved attitudes, it is hoped that the contribution of older people in the economy will be recognised and acted upon by employer groups, government bodies and training providers.
TICK TOCK Project Goals:

To use a variety of research techniques to identify problems of recruitment, flexibility and training issues for employers and job-seekers in the 50+ age group.

To be guided by the leading principles of innovation, equal opportunities, empowerment, mainstream application and trans-national cooperation.

To disseminate learning from the research through reports and interactive means.

To develop and implement pilot schemes aimed at removing barriers to training and employment for the older worker, and enhancing employer flexibility and employment opportunity through improved understanding and interaction between employers, employees, agencies and job seekers.

To work with project partners to facilitate mainstream application of learning from the TICK TOCK Project.

The Childcare Project
Flexible Employer Practices & Work Opportunities in the Childcare Sector:
Together with our Researcher, Helen Garforth, we have successfully completed the Action 2 Research and Pilot phase of the Project. This has involved extensive work across the Reading and W Berkshire area with nurseries, childminders, training providers and various delivery agencies. Our findings and the outcomes of this part of the project are due to be published by Septembers
E-learning for the older worker:
We have successfully trialled an e-learning programme for the NVQ3 in Childcare together with our project partner, Chiltern Training Ltd. This had led to at least one employee of a local nursery gaining the opportunity of promotion due to her new qualification.
The Experienced Employee Route to NVQ 3 Childcare
We are currently exploring the possibility of developing and acquiring accreditation for a new EER programme to facilitate experienced employees in the Childcare industry to gain their NVQ on the job using an innovative 360 Degree training analysis and expert witness programme. The Retail Project
Training & Employment Opportunities for Older People in the Retail Industry.
The WELL Centre continues to lead this project focussing on the major regeneration areas including Slough, Bracknell and Reading where potential employment opportunities are arising from inward investment, and the need for employers to recruit from as wide a pool as possible.
The research and pilot phase of the project has been very exciting. Our Research team have done a great job in bringing the research findings into practical programmes for trial in the Slough and Bracknell Areas. Beneficiaries from the project have gone on to gain new confidence, new skills, and in some cases new employment.
Flair on the Floor
Peter and Barbara Knight developed the Flair on the Floor programme for older job seeker referred from the AgeWorks programme run by Age Concern, Slough. This innovative programme gave individuals a holistic and supportive process of 9 sessions building confidence, preparing for interviews, and developing their skills. The WELL Centre project worked with local employers to arrange work placements for candidates - some of whom were offered permanent employment as a result!!
As this phase of the project draws to a close it appears that the Flair on the Floor programme is developing a life of its own. The WELL Centre is currently exploring various ways to bring this into mainstream use and develop it further for groups and organisations as we continue to broker with employers in the area.
Watch this space for updates on the final phase of the project as we publish our findings, and create new opportunities........
